Introduction to the field trip in the Buda Thermal Karst area

ECROFI2019 Post-conference field trip - 27th June 2019
Instructions: It is recommended to bring hiking shoes or boots to the field trip. As the temperature is constantly 12 °C (54 °F) in the Szemlőhegy Cave, that we will visit in the afternoon, we suggest you to bring a sweater or coat as well. However lunch packages will contain mineral water (0,5 L), due to the hot weather it is proposed to bring enough water for the whole day.

Departure with the bus to the top of Gellért-hill |

Short walk (200 m) to the sightseeing point (please do not stop meanwhile to make photos, the view will be much better from the point we are going to stop together) |

Walking down the Gellért-hill to the Gellért spa (800 m). Small outcrops with quick stops on the way by the path (travertines) |

Short break in the foyer of the Spa-building, explanations about the hydrogeology of the Buda Thermal Karst (toilets, deposition of clothes and bags unnecessary underground. The temperature in the tunnel is ~40oC, humidity is high, so you can leave behind anything warmer than a T-shirt) |

Walking tour in the tunnels and caves (Ősforrás, Aragonite Cave) in two groups beneath the Gellért spa: Dr. Anita Erőss |

Departure with the bus to the Szemlő-hegy cave |

Lunch with a view to the city, then Szemlőhegy Cave visit: Thermal karst features, mineral precipitates, porosity |

Departure to Molnár János Cave |
15:30-17:30 |
Visit of Molnár János cave in three groups: discharging waters and caves of the Rózsadomb area: Dr. Anita Erőss. While one group visits the cave the others may sit down to have a cafe in the nearby bar |
